If you’ve heard anything about the Kaspar Schulz lately, you’ve probably wondered what the heck is that?  Basically, it’s the fancy name for our newest addition here at Big Rock; our pilot brewery.

It’s a small brewery, stored within Big Rock’s main brewery and it allows us to experiment and play with new recipes. So far we’ve come up with a bunch of new brews, none that we’re completely ready to bring to the mainstream market, but we’re getting there.

This mini-brewery really let’s us be expressive in the creation of new brews, and allows us to get really crafty!

If you come for a tour, we’ll show it to you, but in the meantime, here’s a real quick photo tour by our Brewery Manager Jody, just to give you a look at what it’s all about!

See you soon!

These are the fermentation tanks sepcifically for the Kaspar Schulz brews.

This is one of the Kaspar Schulz brews fermenting presently. It’s a Cherry flavoured Belgian Ale, yum!!

After the first stage of fermentation the pilot beers head to the next stage, the cold fermenting tanks.

And then, eventually we get to the testing time!

If Ed likes a style of beer he’ll ask me to make it. In fact, when anyone at Big Rock suggests a new beer I have to consider it. But I won’t make a beer I don’t like.

To me (and my brewing team) each batch brew is a work of art. Brewing fresh, full flavoured beers is our craft and something we take a lot of pride in.

Sometimes our beer is a huge hit with thousands of people. Sometimes it’s beloved by me — and five of my best friends. That’s the way it goes. It’s an art, not a science.

When it came to drinking light beers, Ed McNally had never found a light beer he really liked. So he asked one of the original brewmasters to make one: Jack Rabbit Light Lager.

For many beer drinkers a typical “light beer” tastes watered-down – with only a subtle beer flavour. Ed doesn’t like ordinary beer and, quite frankly, neither do I. I’m glad I can continue to brew a great light beer like Jack Rabbit.

I know you’re reading a blog right now and, while I am not a blog guru, I do know a lot about beer. Jack Rabbit is low in alcohol (and calories) yet full of distinct, rich malt flavour. It’s an extraordinary light beer worth drinking.

Cheers – enjoy this coming long weekend.

Big Rock Eddies

“I think it is safe to say that Big Rock Brewery makes Calgary’s favorite beer. Since the start, its customers have been its biggest promoters. Long before it became known as crowdsourcing, Big Rock thought up creative ways to involve those promoters in its brand.”

Your social calendar has probably started to fill with holiday parties. That is why we are taking the time to remind you to be responsible, while enjoying the “spirits” of the season.

And so we say, “Please don’t drink and drive.”

YOU! Don't Drink and Drive!

Coaster

Our friends at the Calgary Police Service and Associated Cabs have been working with us to develop this campaign  that will run in approximately 100 bars and restaurants in Calgary.

Hopefully, having the coasters and posters up in local pubs, bars and restaurants we will keep the message top of mind – especially when people are in the midst of holiday celebrations and specifically right before they make a decision on how they are going to get home that night.

The Associated Cab phone number is prominently displayed on both the poster and the coaster to ensure the message is not only clear but that it helps the individual make the call to book a cab ride home.

Happy Holidays from Big Rock!
