Our Hometown: Grasshoppin' Around Edmonton Folk Fest

Submitted by Field Reporter on August 10, 2009

The highlight after Day 3 at the Edmonton Folk Festival was a session called Megatunes with Loudon Wainwright III, Jill Barber, Danny Michel and Fred Eaglesmith.

As the session came to a close and the acts realized there was only enough time for one remaining song, they all jumped in on a collective version of Loudon's "Swimming Song"!

"Swimming Song" happens to be one of Bryn's and my (very) favourite summer songs of all time - so we were pretty pscyhed!) Here is the link for you to take a listen: SWIMMING SONG.

Our best discovery of the day was Johnny Flynn & the Sussex Wit from England.  Though their sound has some traditional folk elements to it, it's got a great edge that sets them apart.

Any free time between sets was spent under the sun in the beer tent, which was absolutely jam-packed with people having a good time, particularly for this guy. I don't know the back story here, but the after effects of an apparent slap to the gut were pretty amusing, and evidently a source of pride for the victim.

The closing act of the night on main stage came from Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, which is sure to be one of the liveliest acts of the entire festival!

Onto Day 4: The Swiftys, The Wooden Sky and Bela Fleck.
