Green is all the rage. We get it.

Big Rock BreweryRecently we recruited employees from all departments to lead our Sustainability Management Team. This group has been tasked to help us identify opportunities for improvement. For example, the installation of energy-efficient lighting through out the brew house and administrative offices cut our electricity usage by more than 10 %. (It was easy to do and we saw the results immediately.)

On an ongoing basis we recycle spent grain and yeast (every year approximately 3,000 tons of spent grain and 25 tons of yeast solids is distributed to farmers for cattle feed). We also manage a recycling program for paper, glass, stretch wrap and wooden pallets. And, you probably don’t know this but, 100% of the barley we use at the brewery comes from Western Canadian farms. (Think about how much fuel it takes to put a banana on your table or an imported beer in your fridge. We think that whenever possible local ingredients are the better option.) Efficient management of the beautiful Rocky Mountain water we use for our brews was another area of improvement for us. Last year we implemented practices that reduce water consumption and reduced our water consumption by almost 35%.

That's just a bit about what we are working on here at the brewery. We thought you would find it interesting.

If you have an suggestions on how you think we can improve we would also be interested in hearing from you.
